The Real ROI of Deep Expertise
Choosing trusted foundations over trendy leashes to manufacture the one resource that matters: time.
The tech world is obsessed with the new. Every day there’s a new framework, a new platform, a new ‘right way’ of doing things. The pressure to jump on the bandwagon is immense.
When I started exploring the incredible power of AI and automation with n8n, the chorus was unanimous: ‘Just run it on Docker. It’s easier.’
But ‘easy’ is not always ‘right’, at least not for me.
I chose to build on a foundation I’ve trusted in production for over eight years: Proxmox. But true expertise means knowing where to experiment. As Stephen McCranie said, “The only difference between a master and a rookie is that the master has failed more times than the rookie has even tried.” It’s always better to learn—and fail—in the lab. So, I started this project where I start all my learning: on my homelab, installing n8n in its own virtual machine, a self-contained digital homestead.
This wasn’t about being contrarian for the sake of it. It was about the quiet confidence that comes from deep expertise in a powerful, foundational tool. It was a testament to the idea that old wisdom can be the best platform for new exploration. My years with Proxmox weren’t a legacy to be escaped, but a bedrock upon which I could build with true freedom and real knowledge of the base.
And this is where it connects to something deeper, something that gnaws at me far more than technical specs: the ghost of my past regrets.
The ultimate goal of all this technology—the AI, the automation, the virtualization—is not to be more productive in the traditional sense. It’s to buy back our most precious, non-renewable resource: time. It’s to build systems that work for us, in the background, reliably and on our own terms, so we can be more present in our lives.
My homelab isn’t just a rack of servers in my basement (or just an small re-purposed old pc); it’s a rebellion against the culture that stole those hours from me with my son all those years ago. It’s my machine for manufacturing time. The expertise in ‘old’ tools like Proxmox allows me to harness the ‘new’ tools like AI and n8n, not as a servant to their ecosystems, but as a master of my own.
This is the real ROI of deep expertise. It’s not just about efficiency at work. It’s about building a life where you don’t have to look back with the same regrets I do.
